Abs Are Made in the Kitchen

Let’s talk nutrition! Abs are made in the kitchen. I’m sure I am not the only one that has heard this. I see it and hear it often. My main issues are 1). I am a snacker, and 2). I am not consistent with my meal plans. I like pretzels with cheese, hummus with pita chips, chips, and the list goes on and on. Planning meals and workouts is similar to my everyday job in that it requires research. I know that meals have to compliment my workouts, and I have to find a meal plan that works. One of the issues I find with meal planning is the conflict it causes when planning meals for my family. If I can stick to a plan for my breakfast, lunch, and snacks, then I can cater dinner around my family likes. Win! Win!

I kind of have an idea in mind on how my plan can work. I just need to test it out and see. For breakfast, my favorite go-to options are English muffins and peanut butter with fruit or English muffin sandwiches loaded with avocado, bacon, and eggs. I used to put cheese on my English muffin sandwiches and regular bacon, but I decided to cut on the cheese and swap to turkey bacon. I need one more breakfast option to put in rotation. I’m thinking some form of oatmeal with dried fruit. I just need to figure out how to cook the oatmeal with a texture to my liking. My lunch meal plans are still in the works. I know I am going to need something simple to start with. I may do chicken, rice, and broccoli every day. I’m still doing my research on that, so we will see what I decide. I think my snacks will consist of smoothies. Today, I bought some new whey protein from Women’s Best. I’ve done my research on whey proteins, and this one makes the top of the list based on ingredients and reviews. I haven’t tasted it yet, so it may drop to the bottom. It seems like my plan is off to a good start. Let’s see what happens!

Time to Get Consistent

Let’s talk fitness! The first word that comes to mind for me is consistency. I have been on my fitness journey for a while now. Nonetheless, I have not gained my definition of my ideal physique. My primary issue is my consistency. I’ll write out my workout regime and stick to it for a good week and then BAM. I knock myself out of my routine. I’ll try eating right for a week, and BAM! Again, I knock myself out of my routine. I have found some great workout routines that work well with my schedule. Initially, this was a primary concern of mine. Some of my favorite workouts come from MrandMrsMuscle or NourishMoveLove. They provide a variety of workouts for whatever time span that works best for each person. Twenty–minute to thirty–minute, home-based workouts work best for me. I’ve been able to build myself up with the amount of weight I’m using. I’ve moved from using 10 lb weights to 15 lb weights in my workouts. Now, I just need to work on my consistency with the workouts. Today, I restarted the Split Strong workout program from NourishMoveLove. We’ll see how this week goes. I’m writing it down that I’m going to be consistent while also speaking it into existence. Time to get this journey restarted and kicking my consistency into high gear.

Nails

April 2020
April 2020

Let’s talk nails. Nails can serve as a fashion statement. There are so many nail polish brands to choose from, so you can basically pick a nail color to match any outfit. There are also other nail paints that can be applied to nails, such as gels, acrylic, dip, etc. During my teenage years, I loved to get acrylic nails. I learned my lesson with those because they left ridges on my nails. During my early adult years, I was in nursing school, so my nails took a backseat. After being a nurse for 13 years, my nails need some tender love and care. Having to constantly clean my hands with soap and water or sanitizer over the years has left me with some pretty bad cuticles and dryness around my nail beds. The pictures above show the ongoing cycle I have with my cuticles. As a nurse, I know it is imperative to take good care of my cuticles as broken skin can provide an introduction to germs. The feature image for this post, taken May 2021, was my attempt at some self-care by getting gel nails at a professional salon. Let’s just say they didn’t last like they were supposed to, so now I can cross acrylic and gel nails off of my list. I want to go back to caring for my nails at home. I’m searching for a routine that can help me heal my cuticle beds and some beautiful polish that lasts. I’ve tried several brands already: OPI, Essie, Sally Hansen, and China Glaze. I have a new one that I’m eyeing because I’ve seen and read great things about it: Olive and June. I have this lovely image in my mind of me painting my nails with a glass of wine by my side and it just being an awesome experience. I also think I want to post weekly updates to show my different nail looks. We’ll see how this journey goes.

Sunglasses

Can you believe that something as simple as picking and wearing a pair of sunglasses used to cause me a sense of fear? I finally narrowed down what caused the fear. I have a wide face per my definition, and the temples (new word alert!) of narrow shades used to bulge out when I put them on. After a while, I was over it and decided shades were not for me. My glasses would have to do. Well I guess someone else had the same issue and created a solution for that problem. A variety of shades in different styles to fit my wide face. Now, I can’t get enough of shades and the different styles available. The cute shades pictured in my feature image and post came from Wal-Mart at a very affordable price. I actually had to stop myself because there were too many to choose from. Now, this mama is styling in her new shades and looking to add more to her collection. At a reasonable price of course!

Hi! My name is Keri, and I want to welcome you to the little corner of my world. I started this blog as a creative outlet for me to find myself again outside of the roles of being a wife and mom. I want to take you on the journey with me as a tenure-track assistant professor with touches of academia, fashion, and fitness. I look forward to this journey and if you have some of the same interests I look forward to engaging with you along the way.
